Kydex is a line of thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride materials manufactured by Sekisui SPI. It has numerous applications, including aircraft bulkheads, firearm holsters, and knife sheaths.

It is an acrylic-polyvinyl chloride composite engineered for thermoforming fabrication, and combines properties of both the acrylic and the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) components.

It gains rigidity and formability from acrylic, while PVC contributes toughness, chemical resistance, and favorable interior finish ratings.

The thickness of the sheets varies from .029 to .500 inches (0.74 to 12.70 mm), and they can be thermoformed, post-formed, brake-formed, and laminated.

For some applications, it is used as a replacement for leather, where it has the following advantages:

  • Waterproof
  • Scratch resistant (Rockwell scale "R" hardness of 90)
  • Holds its shape better, and will not stretch or shrink under normal conditions
  • Lower friction
  • Easy to wipe clean

Kydex History  Kydex began in the late 1960s, when the Rohm and Haas Company was the authority on materials for aircraft interiors. Eventually, due to its versatility, Kydex started to gain a foothold in several other industries.
