AEB-L Razor Blade Steel
AEB-L Razor Blade Steel has a long history as a dark horse in the industry, and sometimes referred to by the name 13C28 or Sandvik's 13C26. However, AEB-L has been underappreciated for a long time. Even though almost everyone has had it in their home at one point or another, most likely in the form of disposable razors.
Best described by the noted metallurgist Roman Landes as a stainless form of 52100 as AEB-L offers some of the finest, most evenly distributed carbide structure available outside powdered metallurgy or spray form steels.
It is very fine-grained with tiny carbides that resist tear-out. At some point in time, someone suggested AEB-L was similar to 440-C. AEB-L has significantly lower carbon content, avoiding the huge chromium carbides found in 440-C.
It is easy to heat treat and does not present the finishing difficulties associated with high vanadium steels like S90V. This is why it has quickly become the top choice for makers just beginning to explore stainless steel, gaining widespread attention in kitchen knife circles that were previously dominated by other varieties.
